No Path Without Pain

Amal Remembers Yitzhak Rabin and His Struggle for Peace

Encounters of a Different Kind

In order to promote peace, we need to get to know our neighbors and learn to
appreciate the cultures and religions of others. It is clear that not everyone will
agree on every issue. Nonetheless, it is important to recognize the right of each
individual to his personal beliefs, whether political or religious.
Tolerance and mutual respect, regardless of our differing views, are conditions
for peaceful coexistence.
There is too much hatred based on religion, race or ethnic background. It is time
to put aside the hatred and the extremism which tear apart today's society. We
need to find ways to build the defenses of peace in "the minds of men."

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a Black American who was assassinated in 1968
because he believed there should be equality for all American people. In his most
famous speech, "I Have A Dream", he described the reality that he would have liked
to see for the black people of America.
Like Rabin, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Just as Israeli's
hold an annual memorial day for Rabin, the Americans have a memorial day for
King, but while Rabin's memorial day is held on the anniversary of his death,
Americans celebrate a holiday in King's honor.
Compare and contrast Rabin's life and assassination to Martin Luther
King's.
How much of King's dream has become a reality in America today?
What was Rabin's dream?
How much of Rabin's dream has become a reality in the Middle East
today?
