The IDF was established with the Stateo f Israel, in 1948. It provides the country's defense umbrella. The three service branches of the IDF - the ground forces, the air force and the navy - function under a unified command.
The IDF is built mainly on its reserve soldiers who are called up regularly for training and service. In time of war the reserves form the bulk of the fighting forces. Except when fighting is involved, men and women soldiers serve side by side as technicians, intelligence specialists, instructors and administrative personnel. Of some 800 jobs, over 500 are open to women.
From the beginning the IDF has been responsible for educational and social needs of its soldiers with cultural activities as well as personal support services, provided during their army service. Career officers are encouraged to study at the IDF's expense at institutions of higher learning.
For its part in the national effort to help new immigrants, the IDF trains personnel to teach Hebrew at absorption centers throughout Israel.
