PBL Project Description

Teacher: Lerner Elena

The main idea of the project is to investigate the origin of  streets  names surrounding the school “Shevah Mofet”.
The purpose of  the investigation is to draw attention of the pupils to things they see and hear daily but never try to find out what stands behind these names. Another goal is to introduce  the results of the investigation  in front of students of other English groups as well as the parents of the pupils. Most of them are immigrants who never studied in Israeli schools and have poor knowledge of history of the country as well as the  famous names of outstanding representatives of Israeli and Jewish societies who played important roles in history and in the development of  Zionist movement.

The project was suggested to the 8th graders level B. The group of 31 pupils was divided into 9 teams of three or four.  The choice of streets was made in the form of  a lottery.

The first stage was to look for the data about each street  in the Internet and to adapt the found material to the more appropriate level or to translate it from Hebrew into English.  It enriched the pupils’ vocabulary. The first drafts were checked by the teacher.  While checking I tried to point out other directions which were connected to each street under investigation. For example, when we found out that La-Guardia is not only the name of the airport in New York but first of all the name of the mayor of the city of Jewish origin who was re-elected 4 times, we went on describing the street which finished by Park Volfson. The investigation got a new push  to find out what stands after that name.  The same happened in many streets.

While checking  the papers I realized that the pupils are lack of certain grammatical rules. So during the lessons I introduced  the new grammar material –Passive Voice which was not supposed to be taught in the 8th grade. We practiced at the lessons and I asked the pupils to correct their mistakes in their papers. That’s how we got the sentences like:

The street was named after……………..

The house was built at the beginning of the century.

The newspaper was published in Poland . And so on.

The second stage  supposed the pupils to have a walk along their streets and make pictures of the most important buildings. We didn’t succeed much on this stage because the pupils tried to enter the buildings and ask questions about the history of them but the adults who work there could hardly answer  them.

The third stage  included the exchange of the found information between the groups. In class the pupils were sitting in teams and one pupil from each group was asked to move to another group and tell there about all their findings. Then the members of the groups were asked to talk in front of the class and tell them what they have learnt.

While investigating the Shevah street the group decided to talk mainly about our school. And I think it’s quite logical. This is what each pupil of the school has to know and the history of the school  is really interesting. I invited Yakov Mozganof, one of the founders of the school, to the class and he told us how it had all started. He also showed us a lot of pictures  which are related to the  early years of Shevah Mofet. In this pictures there were many teachers who are still working in the school and Yakov told about the role of everyone in creation of our school. I think it was one of the important moments because the respect to these teaches  increased immediately. He also showed a lot of newspaper articles from different years concerning the school as well as book published in Israel where they tell about the school and its role. That showed the pupils the importance and exclusiveness of  Shevah Mofet.

The second important moment was when Yakov told about our graduates, their achievements today and  the role of our school in  their achievements. It gives  better motivation for studying and respect and pride for the school. Next lesson the pupils were supposed to bring compositions where they wrote the main facts learnt from  Mozganov’s lecture. It was the fourth stage of our investigation.

The fifth stage  was a trip around the neighborhood. There were stations at each street. Each  team made a mini –presentation of their street. For about two minutes the pupils spoke about the main facts about the street they  investigated. Each team prepared a game to check the understanding of the presented material. There were groups that didn’t present but made the game in the form True / False or  Do you Believe  or Not which helped the pupil gain necessary information.. The games were creative and involved all the class. There were groups where the parents participated  in the preparation of the games.

The sixth stage was the presentation of the project in front of l the pupils of 8th and 9th  grades. The presentation was preceded by a long and creative work. From all the findings of the investigation each group  made small conversational  situations which made the presentation more interactive and interesting.

As a teacher I helped the pupils with all the phonetic problems. Again and again the pupils read their parts and were corrected if necessary.  At last everything was learnt by heart and the rehearsals started. During the rehearsals the pupils learnt a lot of secrets about  being on the stage.

The presentation which  was a success was followed by a game –quiz with the help of the computer program Kahoot.  The answers of the  pupils from the audience showed that they listened carefully and understood  all the main findings of our investigation.

Hamasger is a famous street in Tel AvivIsrael. Hamasger Street is a reference to the profession of the locksmith. This street parallels to the Ayalon Freeway.

Before the establishment of Tel Aviv, there was a dirty road along the street.

In the mid-19th century  a farm was established by American Protestants and known as "Mount Hope". At this place today we see the building of Shevah Mofet school that became the second high school in the country. Only two big trees on  the territory of the country remind us about the farm.

With the development of the city the look of the street changed. Various factories were established, mostly small workshops and garages. Between the industrial buildings also many nightclubs and restaurants rose with age.

Most of the car building companies are presented in this street.

So if you are planning to buy a car Hamasger street is the address!

Bnei brak

Our school is surrounded  by many small streets. One of them has the name  Brei Brak. It may seem strange that the street was named after the city, but we know that streets are usually name after famous people, places and events. The existence of the street named Brei Brak emphasizes the importance of one of the oldest cities in our country.

Perhaps you don’t know that the name of  Brei Brak city is mentioned in Tanah. That means that is existed in the first Temple and the secondTemple periods. Everybody knows that Bnei Brak city is the largest religious center.
Not by chance the name Brei Brak was given to the street in Tel-Aviv where religious life is concentrated.

In the street there are a lot of synagogues, schools for studying Bible and a lot of religious people live there.

HaTsfira  Street

Most of the pupils and teachers every morning enter the school from
Hatsfira street. Doesn’t the name of the street sound strange?
Let’s try to find the origin of the name.

After the first Zionist Congress in 1862 in Warsaw,Poland, they started publishing the first weekly Hebrew newspaper named Hatsfira.

The editor of the newspaper was Chaim Slominski, a highly educated man. He wrote books, which were translated into German and English.
In 1844 he invented the calculation machine and received an award of 2500 rubles from the Academy. Later he was crowned with the title
“A Learned Citizen”.

The newspaper covered political events but  the main emphases was mane on science.  In 1873 the Polish government started censorship of Hebrew books and the newspaper was closed. In 1875 it was opened again and existed till 1935.

At that period the editor of the newspaper was Nahum Sokolov, who started working in the newspaper at the age of 14. There is a street named after him in the center of Tel-Aviv.

Shevah  Street

Shevah street is a small street that is mostly famous for the location of Shevah school there. But not always there was a school at this place. In the middle of the 19th century a farm was built by two groups of protestants from Russia and  the USA.  The name of the farm wasMount Hope.

The life on the farm was very hard .  The residents of the farm suffered from malaria and from their Arab neighbors. One day in January 1858,
5 Arabs attacked the farm. They raped and killed some of the residents.
When Clorinda Minor, the founder of the farm, died many members of the farm left and only three families stayed.

In 1946 the decision was made to build a school at that place.  The founder of the school gave the name to the school Shevah after his nephew who was a pilot in the World War II and was killed.

The nearest small street got the same name.

It’s interesting to mention that there are two big trees on the territory of the school that have  survived since the days of  the farm.

Yitzhak Sadeh Street

The origin of the name of this street is absolutely clear. It was named after one of the most outstanding figures in the history of Israel.
It seems that most of the facts of his biography are known to the citizens of our country, but still there were some interesting findings about him.

Yitzhak Sade was born in 1890 in the place that belonged to Russia, now it is Poland. During the  World War I he fought for the Russian Empire. He even got the medal for bravery.
In 1920 he came to Israel and served in the police in Jerusalem and in 1937 he became the commander of Jewish police.

The facts that he became the founder of the Israeli Defense Forces and the Palmah  are widely known.  He played an important role in theIndependence war in Israel in 1948.

In 1949 Yitzhak Sadeh finished his military career and started writing stories and plays.  Now there is a special prize named after Yitzhak Sadeh for military literature.

Yitzhak Sadeh street is one of the central streets in Southern  Tel-Aviv.

Harakevet

The street got this name because the first rail track connecting Tel-Aviv  Jaffa and Jerusalem  stretched at that place. It was as far back as  in 1892.

The first plans of building the railroad between Jerusalem and Jaffawere    made by Moses Montefiore in 1856. (there is a street in Tel-Aviv named after  him) He was an Italian Jew who donated large sums of money to promote industry, business, economics, education and health among the Jewish community in the place known today asIsrael.

In his desire to built here the railroad he brought  the specialists fromEngland and Germany but his plans failed.

The businessman from Jerusalem Josef  Navon invested money and also raised a big sum of money in France in 1890  and the construction of the track started.

Most of the workers were from France. They worked under very difficult conditions. Many of the workers died of sever diseases.

On September 26, 1892 the railroad started operating. The journey from Jerusalem to Jaffa took 6 hours.

It was ruined many times by Arabs.  During the Arab –Israeli war in 1948 the service was stopped.

Today Harakevet street is a club area for Tel-Aviv youngsters with huge clubs and dance bars such as Dome, Vox and others.

La Guardia street

La Guardia Street is the main street of Yad Elyaho neighborhood and crosses its entire length from east to west.
The street takes its beginning from the bridge not far from Shevah Mofet school and stretches till Wollfson Park.

All the buildings in the street were built in 1950s. In the street there is only one multistoried  building that is different from others . The ground floor is occupied by a Maccabi clinic and a department of Hapoalim bank.

Who was this street named after?  The street got its name afterFiorello La Guardia who was born in a prestigious Jewish family in1882 in New York. He was a very energetic and charismatic person that attracted attention of public. So in 1916 he was elected to Congress. He worked as a congressman till 1934. Then he was elected a mayor of New York and stayed in the post until 1945.

He is considered one of the three or four greatest mayors in American history.
Is the memory of this outstanding man kept in his motherland? Yes, we found out that one of the airports in New York city  was named after
Fiorello La Guardia. Originally it was called Curtis airport, after name of one of the pioneers of aviation in the USA. After Fiorello La Guardia died in 1947 the airport was renamed and received its present name.

Let’s return to La Guardia street. The street ends with park which has a rather large area. There are a lot of unique plants and trees. The park is named after Edit Wollfson, a wife of a businessman. They both contributed to the establishment of the park.

Rival street

Rival  is a small street just behind the school. There is nothing special about the street itself, but as usual behind the name there is an  interesting person. The word RIVAL consists of the initials of Rabi Yitzhak Bar Levinson.

He wasn’t a very famous person but still he was a part of the Jewish history. He was a philosopher and wrote satirical books about Hasidim.
He claimed that the Jews should  learn the languages of the European countries they lived in  and integrate into European political and cultural life of the people of Europe. He also had an impact on the economy of Russia.  His last years  he was confined to bed due to a serious disease but he never stopped writing and learning.
His grandfather Jekuthel Salomon also had an impact on the development of our country. He  was a journalist, editor and a printer.
